BRIEF HISTORY

Murugi Mugumango WSP came into being after the amalgamation of five small water projects, the first of which was formed in 1975.  It was registered as a society on 7th June 1984, under the society’s Act Cap 108 Laws of Kenya (Nonprofit making).

It is owned and managed by the local community of Murugi, Kirumi and Ganga locations covering approximately 59.29km2 Serving over 26,370 people.

The project was the first in Kenya to receive assistance from Canadian Hunger Foundation (CHF). CHF provided us with pipes (60km), fittings and tanks construction materials worthy Ksh. 2.8 million.  CHF appointed Research and planning services (R.P.S) to implement the project on their behalf and train the society staff to operate and maintain (O&M) the project after completion.

The community had raised Ksh. 600,000= and constructed two intakes and laid 2.5km

6” pipeline before CHF came in.  The community also provided both skilled and unskilled labour and locally available materials for tank construction.

The scheme is gravity fed system with a production of 13,000m3 per day from South Maara and Kamaara rivers.

The WSP has a vision “TO EXECEL AS A COMMUNITY WATER SERVICES PROVIDER IN KENYA”.

Mission Statement

To provide improve livelihoods, affordable, reliable, accessible quality water and sanitation services at all times to all residents of MurugiMugumango areas in Maara Sub County.

Mandate Statement

MurugiMugumango community Water Services Provider is mandated to provide efficient and economical water to improve the livelihood and sanitation services within the area as specified in the license and maintain/develop national and county government assets for water and sanitation service provision as per the Water Act 2016.

Core Functions

  • Provide water and sanitation services within Maara sub county as specified in the license. Exercise overall control over the supply of water and sanitation services in the specified area in the license.
  • To abstract water for the purposes of distribution and supply from all our appropriate sources.
  • To undertake water quality analysis to ensure that acceptable water quality standards are maintained.
  • To levy water consumer charges as approved in respect of the services which the WSP provides.
